Lab Server

The lab server can be found on the Internet at chil.rice.edu, or hard address 128.42.98.145. (It is also listed in AppleTalk as "CHIL Red Giant" but it really shouldn't be connected to via AppleTalk anyway.) It is both a Web server and a file server. This is not a work machine, and should only have someone sitting at it doing work when they are doing server administration. The dinky monitor (which should be kept OFF unless in use) is to discourage casual use. The machine has four disk partitions:

RG System, which is the system disk for the server. Only when doing administration stuff should this be touched.
Sunburn, which is Byrne's partition.
NetServe, which is where the lab's Web and FTP directories are hosted. The Web directory is "www" on this partition.
RedGiant, the main parition.

Every lab member should have read access to everything on RedGiant, but write access is a little more restricted. In particular, every lab member should have their own folder on RedGiant, and people should only have write access to their own folders.

There is some small probability that this machine will occasionally be visible to the outside world. Thus, there should be no copyrighted material not owned by you kept on this machine. Yes, that means no illegal MP3s.

There are two other important folders on RedGiant besides personal folders, which are "X Support" and "Public." "X Support" is stuff for experiments, which is described elsewhere.

"Public" is where we keep all public documents, as well as lab software. This includes forms, databases, folders for research projects, mimio boards, and document templates.

Backups

All files on the server should be backed up every night, so in principle this should be a safe place to store files. The backup strategy for other machines is still in flux, but should be updated here when we've come to a decision.
